GHK-Cu is the molecule the longevity crowd keeps circling back to. Here is what it is, what it signals, and why concentration and delivery decide whether any of it matters.
What GHK-Cu actually is
GHK-Cu is a copper-binding tripeptide: glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine bound to a copper ion. Your body makes it. It circulates in plasma and shows up wherever tissue is being remodeled. Levels run high when you are young and decline with age, from roughly 200 ng/mL at 20 to closer to 80 ng/mL by 60. The signal fades right as the architecture starts to need it most.
The signal it carries
GHK-Cu is not a moisturizer. It is a messenger. Applied at the right concentration, it participates in the conversations your skin uses to maintain its own structure:
- Matrix remodeling. It supports the synthesis of collagen (types I and III), elastin, and glycosaminoglycans, the scaffolding that gives skin its density.
- Antioxidant defense. It is associated with higher superoxide dismutase activity, part of how skin manages oxidative load after training or stress.
- Barrier support. It reinforces the appearance and integrity of the skin's protective barrier.
Be honest about the evidence
The mechanism is well characterized in the lab. The human data is promising but still early, much of it small-scale rather than large clinical trials. Why concentration and delivery decide everything
This is where most products quietly fail. A peptide only works if it reaches the skin intact and at a meaningful dose.
