What Percentage of GHK-Cu Actually Matters

Concentration is the first thing to check on a copper peptide product and the thing brands are least willing to publish. Here is what each tier means and why the number stops helping past a point.

The tiers

Under 0.5%: below the useful range

Common in multi-ingredient formulas where copper tripeptide-1 appears near the end of an ingredient list as a marketing inclusion. Present, technically. Not a dose.

If a product lists twelve actives and discloses none of their percentages, this is usually what you are looking at.

0.5%: entry point

A real dose and a defensible starting place for reactive skin or a first copper peptide. Lower signal, correspondingly lower risk of over-driving anything.

The tradeoff is timeline. Less signal means a longer runway to a visible result, on a molecule that already runs on a slow clock.

1%: the working concentration

The saturation threshold. This is where the signal registers reliably and where most of the useful topical work has been done.

It is the default for a reason. Enough to drive remodeling on a normal timeline, not so much that cycling becomes urgent rather than advisable.

2% and above: diminishing, then negative

Here is the part that gets skipped.

GHK-Cu is a signaling molecule, not a consumable. Receptors saturate. Once the signal is fully received, adding more does not produce a stronger response, it just extends how hard the remodeling machinery runs.

And remodeling has two halves. The breakdown side scales with the signal too. Push high concentrations continuously and the clearing outpaces your synthesis rate, which is the mechanism behind copper uglies.

High-percentage products are not scams and they have a place in structured short protocols. They are simply not a beginner purchase, and they make cycling mandatory rather than sensible.

Why higher is not linearly better

The intuition that comes from acids and vitamin C does not transfer.

With an exfoliating acid, more concentration means more surface removed. Roughly linear, with a tolerance ceiling.

With a signaling peptide, you are not removing anything. You are telling cells to do something. Once the message is received at full volume, saying it louder changes nothing about the response and only changes how long the machinery runs. That is why 1% is a threshold rather than a midpoint.

What an undisclosed percentage means

Assume it is low.

A disclosed concentration is a selling point when the number is good. Brands publish numbers they are proud of. The only reason to withhold a favorable spec is that it is not favorable.

Two things sometimes get offered instead, and neither is a substitute:

  • Position in the ingredient list. Vague at best, and easily gamed by splitting a formula across similar ingredients.
  • "Clinical strength" or "maximum potency." Unregulated phrases with no defined meaning. They are what a brand says when it will not say a number.

The other numbers that decide it

Concentration is necessary and not sufficient. A 2% serum at pH 4.0 in a silicone base will underperform a well-formulated 1%, because the copper dissociated before it left the bottle and the carrier blocked what was left.

Scalp versus face

Same concentration logic. What changes is frequency, not strength: once daily on the scalp against twice daily on the face. Doubling the percentage to compensate for skipping an application is not how a saturation threshold works.

The short version

1% is the working number. 0.5% is a reasonable entry. Above 2% you are trading a stronger response you will not get for a cycling requirement you cannot ignore. Undisclosed means low.
