Copper Peptides and Zinc: Three Different Questions

Search this and you get one muddled answer covering three unrelated things. Separating them makes it simple.
Question 1: zinc oxide sunscreen
Not a real problem.
Zinc oxide in a mineral sunscreen is an insoluble particle sitting on the skin surface. It is not a free ion in solution competing for the copper binding site on the peptide. The two are not really interacting.
This rule appears to have grown out of forum discussion in the early 2010s rather than any measurement, and it has been repeated ever since. Notably, products combining copper peptides with zinc oxide sunscreen exist, which is hard to square with a genuine incompatibility.
What to do: serum first, let it dry, sunscreen over the top. That is the routine anyway. More on sunscreen.
Question 2: topical zinc serums
Slightly more worth thinking about, still minor.
Zinc PCA and similar topical zinc ingredients are soluble, unlike zinc oxide. In principle a free divalent metal ion is a more plausible competitor for a chelation site than a solid particle is.
In practice, GHK binds copper with high affinity and the concentrations involved in cosmetics are small. There is no outcome data showing this matters on skin.
What to do: if you want a costless hedge, put them in opposite halves of the day. It takes no effort and removes the question. Do not lose sleep if you layered them once.
Question 3: oral zinc supplements
Different question entirely, and mostly not about your serum.
Zinc and copper compete for absorption in the gut. Sustained high-dose zinc supplementation can lower copper status over time, which is a genuine nutritional consideration and a well documented one.
But that is about your diet and your bloodwork, not about a topical serum. A cosmetic applied to the face is not a meaningful contributor to systemic copper either way.
If you take high-dose zinc long term, that is worth raising with a doctor for reasons that have nothing to do with skincare. I am not going to give supplement dosing advice here, because it is not my lane.
The pattern worth noticing
All three questions get the same answer online because "zinc" is one word. They are a surface particle, a dissolved ion, and a nutritional interaction, and they have almost nothing to do with each other.
This is a good example of why blanket ingredient conflict lists mislead. The useful question is never "does X interact with Y", it is "in what form, at what concentration, in what environment, for how long".
The short version
Zinc sunscreen: fine. Topical zinc serum: probably fine, split the day if you want certainty. Oral zinc: a real nutritional topic, unrelated to what you put on your face.
