Copper Peptides and Niacinamide: Settling the Chelation Myth

Short answer: yes, you can use them together. The warning against it is one of the most durable pieces of misinformation in skincare, and it is worth understanding why it stuck.
Where the myth came from
Niacinamide is a chelator. It binds metal ions. That part is true and it is chemistry, not marketing.
Copper peptides depend on a copper ion staying bound to a tripeptide. So the reasoning goes: chelator plus copper complex equals niacinamide pulling the copper off and neutralizing the peptide.
It is a reasonable-sounding chain of logic. It just does not survive the actual conditions.
Why it does not apply
The chelation studies behind this were run in solution, at concentrations and contact times that do not resemble anything happening on a face.
Three things break the extrapolation:
- Binding affinity. The GHK tripeptide binds copper with high affinity. It is a specific, stable complex, not a loose association waiting to be outcompeted. Niacinamide is a comparatively weak chelator against that bond.
- Concentration and contact. On skin you have thin films of each at cosmetic percentages, absorbing at different rates into different depths, with contact measured in seconds. In-vitro you have both fully dissolved together at high concentration for extended periods. Those are not the same experiment.
- No supporting outcome data. If this effect were meaningful at real conditions, the many people layering both would show it. There is no signal.
The pH question, which is the real one
Worth checking the variable that actually matters with copper peptides, since pH is the thing that breaks them.
- Copper peptides: stable around pH 6.0.
- Niacinamide: formulated between roughly pH 5.0 and 7.0.
They overlap. Unlike vitamin C at pH 3.0, niacinamide is not going to drag a copper peptide out of its stability range. This is the compatible pairing, not the problem one.

How to layer them
Thin to thick, as always.
- Cleanse, dry.
- Copper peptide serum, if it is the thinner of the two.
- Wait sixty seconds.
- Niacinamide.
- Moisturizer, then sunscreen if morning.
If your niacinamide is the thinner product, reverse steps two and four. Texture decides order, not the ingredient list.
If you would rather be conservative anyway, split them across morning and evening. It costs nothing and there is no reason to argue someone out of caution.
Whether it is worth pairing at all
They cover different ground, so yes.
- Niacinamide addresses barrier lipid production, sebum regulation, and the appearance of uneven tone.
- Copper peptides signal matrix remodeling and support barrier integrity from a structural angle.
Neither substitutes for the other, and both are low irritation, which makes this a rare pairing you can add without a barrier cost.
One caution
High-percentage niacinamide, in the 10% range and up, can be irritating on its own for some people. That is a niacinamide dosing issue rather than an interaction, but if you are stacking actives it is worth knowing which one to blame. Most of the benefit is available at 4% to 5%.
The short version
Layer them. The chelation warning is a lab result applied to conditions that do not occur on skin. Watch pH, not chelators, and the pH here overlaps cleanly.
