Where retinol wins
Evidence, straightforwardly. Topical retinoids are among the most studied actives in dermatology and the trial base is not close. If your only criterion is depth of human data, retinol is the answer and it is not a contest.
It is also better at anything turnover-driven: surface texture, congestion, uneven tone, visible pore appearance. Those are outcomes you get by moving the top of the skin faster, which is exactly what retinol does.
Where copper peptides win
Tolerability, and it is a bigger advantage than it sounds. The best active is the one you keep using, and a meaningful number of people never get through retinol adaptation. Copper peptides have no purge, no peel, no adjustment period, and no sun sensitivity.
They also cover barrier support, which retinol does not, and in fact temporarily works against. And they can be run in the morning without a sunscreen caveat.
Where each one costs you
Retinol costs weeks of irritation, sun sensitivity, an ongoing compatibility problem with the rest of your routine, and a real dropout rate.
