Copper Peptides, Dryness and Flaking

Two very different things get called flaking, and telling them apart saves you from solving the wrong problem.
The one that is not flaking
Humectant residue. Aqueous serums contain glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, or similar. In dry air, or applied too heavily, those can leave a slightly tacky film that balls up under your fingers or under makeup.
People describe this as flaking. It is not. It is product sitting on the surface.
Tell: it appears immediately or within minutes of application, comes off cleanly, and your skin underneath looks fine. Real flaking is skin, and it appears hours or days later.
Fix: use less, apply to slightly damp skin, and follow with a moisturizer to seal it. It stops being an issue.
The one that is real
Barrier flaking: actual scale, tightness, roughness, sometimes redness, developing over days.
Here is what matters. A signalling peptide has no exfoliating action. GHK-Cu does not dissolve corneocyte bonds like an AHA or accelerate turnover like a retinoid. There is no direct mechanism for it to cause flaking.
So when the barrier is genuinely flaking, look at the rest of the routine:
- Retinoids anywhere in the routine, especially in the first weeks.
- Acids, including in a cleanser you have stopped noticing.
- Over-cleansing, or a high-pH foaming cleanser.
- Denatured alcohol in any product.
- Weather. Cold, wind, indoor heating.
- The serum's vehicle, if it contains alcohol.
The routine that fixes most of it
- Strip back for a week. Gentle cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen. Nothing else, including the copper peptide.
- Once calm, reintroduce one thing. The copper peptide, every other day.
- Apply to damp skin, and follow with a proper moisturizer rather than leaving the serum bare.
- Build to daily, then twice daily, over two to three weeks.
If the flaking returns only when the copper peptide comes back, on an otherwise minimal routine, then the formula does not suit you.
The layering mistake
An aqueous serum on its own is not moisturizing. It is a delivery system for an active, not a cream. If you apply it and stop there, in a dry climate, you can end up drier than before purely because nothing is sealing water in.
That is not the peptide doing damage, it is an incomplete routine. Follow it with a moisturizer.
The short version
Tacky residue is not flaking, use less and seal it. Real flaking has a cause, and a signalling peptide is rarely it. Strip the routine, rebuild slowly, and always moisturize over an aqueous serum.
